New CASS Publication on Places of Worship

The Centre for Academic Shia Studies is pleased to announce the publication of its latest report titled: 'No Space to Breathe' - Spaces of Worship as 'Generators' of Social Cohesion.

With the fall of Qaddafi's regime in 2011 and the resurfacing of Salafism in the country, the Sufis and Sufi shrines are facing a serious threat.

Dr. Cherstich’s report explores the rise in religious violence and attacks against places of worship, using Libya as a case study, and also sheds lights on the relationship between space of worship and identity. The report recognises the importance of places of worship as spaces of common identity and belonging and that attacks against them are a threat to the social fabric of a specific people.
